The Samaritan Woman went through 5 different husbands, ending up living with a man who was only her boyfriend. When Jesus met her at the well you can tell she was broken and lost, desperate for someone to save her from her misery. She wasn’t happy with her life and who she had become. Jesus asked her for a drink of water and she was confused why He would even associate with her because that was unheard of at the time (Jews did not associate with her kind).
Then, Jesus says if she knew who He was, she would ask Him for a drink of water and He would have given her living water. Jesus goes on to say, “Everyone who drinks this water (well water) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
What is He saying here and how does this relate to today?
– The 5 husbands, the girlfriend / the boyfriend won’t completely fulfill you, you will still be thirsty.
– The next hit/drug/drink won’t fulfill you, you will still be thirsty.
– The millions of dollars won’t fulfill you, you will still be thirsty.
– The thing you desire the most, the degree, the job, the YouTube career, the business, the donut, the cookie, the validation you seek, won’t fulfill you, you will still be thirsty.
Not saying don’t go after what you want. Of course not. Just saying that seeking fulfillment from all the wrong places will always lead to a thirst for more.
But when we seek a relationship with Jesus and His living water,
we become happier, more fulfilled and begin to love and live life from a new, positive perspective.
