When trying to conceive, us women know that everything counts and we take everything into consideration!
So should you pee after sex if you are trying to conceive a baby?
There is more to this question to consider. So please read until the end because while peeing after sex has benefits, waiting to pee may also have benefits. So yes, it is generally recommended for women to urinate after sexual activity. This can help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by flushing out bacteria that may have entered the urethra during sex. Urinating after sex can help prevent the bacteria from reaching the bladder and causing an infection. However, there is a waiting period.
How long should you wait to urinate after sex when trying to conceive?
Wait 5-10 minutes before standing straight up. This does not mean you have to put your legs up in the air or stand on your head or tilt your body upside down. Simply laying down for a few minutes after sex before you get up to pee, can allow the sperm to travel more easily with out the weight of gravity pulling them down, but once they get past a certain point or after 5-10 minutes, it should not matter what position you are in.
Will peeing prevent pregnancy?
If sperm has entered into the vagina, peeing cannot guarantee the prevention of a pregnancy. The belief is that laying down 5-10 minutes after ejaculation may help motivate the sperm to travel towards the egg and not away from it. But some women may find that laying down made no difference at all. It depends on a number of factors, such as, how much sperm, how fast are the sperm, and the environment of the vagina and cervix. This is why on our most fertile periods our vaginal discharge is mostly clear and slippery – resembling the consistency of egg whites – because this consistency allows the sperm to travel more easily without getting destroyed.
So what is the conclusion and recommendations?
If you are trying to conceive and you are worried about the sperm not making it to the egg, you will want to take these steps to maximize the chances of the sperm entering the egg:
- First, you want to download the Flo app and track your menstrual cycles and your fertile periods (this is FREE right now). Do this for a few months before relying on it because it needs time to track your cycles to become very accurate, make sure to include your discharge consistency and your moods/symptoms so that Flo will update with the most accurate results. You can also use this to track the days you have unprotected sex so that when you get pregnant you will be able to go look back at when you conceived. Another way to do this is to get clearblue digital ovulation strips. So you can use the Flo app to track when they think your fertile periods are, then use the clearblue digital ovulation strips to confirm your highest fertile days. When this is confirmed, you can plan to have sexual intercourse on these days.
- Having sex every day when your fertility is highest will increase your chances. However, if you do not have a regular period and/or you think you may not be ovulating (signs would be if you do not see the clear/slippery discharge) then it would be important to speak with your OBGYN or fertility specialist to help you balance your hormones and improve regularity. There are also many supplements that can be found on Amazon that can assist in regulating hormones.
- Shatavari and Maca Root are great choices to help increase fertility and regulate hormones.
- Myo & D-Chiro Inositol dietary supplements are also great to help balance hormones and support ovarian function and boost fertility.
- Disclaimer: Please make sure to consult your doctor if these dietary supplements are safe for you. And understand that everybody responds differently to everything. So please take time to consider if these supplements are right for you. Read reviews before taking and make your decision wisely.
- Make sure the penetration is deep during the release of sperm and ask your spouse to stay within you until completely finished and even maybe a few minutes after they feel they have finished.
- Lay down for 5-10 minutes resting without stressing to allow time for the sperm to travel without the weight of gravity forcing them downwards. Remember tilting your body head down is not generally recommended. Plus we only want to encourage healthy sperm to reach the egg and the healthiest sperm will reach the egg without additional assistance when it is good sperm traveling through a healthy vaginal environment.
- After 5-10 minutes, get up to pee to reduce the risk of UTIs.
